現在 Web は一人一人から見たらノイズだらけです。Web でなくてもある程度の集団の中で主張/情報提供/コミュニケーションを行う際には直感的にノイズと感じるものがあるでしょう。このノイズという言葉、自分のやっている事がノイズではないかなぁ、と変に意識しちゃって萎縮したり、ノイズであるという言葉を発する人に嫌悪感をいだいたりする事が多々あるように思います。
ここでインターネット上(具体的には webサイト/掲示板/メイリングリストなど)のノイズについて、どう解釈すれば建設的であるか、何が真のノイズであるかを、書いておこうと思います。
なお、当記事はわかっている方にとっては当たり前のことを書いています。あまり深く考えていなかった方に伝える目的の文章です。あと、議論/対話におけるノイズが主題ですが、情報におけるノイズも混ざってわかりにくい部分があるかもしれません_o_。だいたいあんまり吟味してないし-_-。書いてから、対話の話に限定すべきだったなと後悔してたり_o_。乱文だけど、面倒だから、出す^^;。
情報/主張のノイズ(雑音)には多くの種類があります。
まずは、似通っている部分が多いのですが、情報提供におけるノイズと、集団での対話/議論におけるノイズに分けておきます。
情報提供系におけるノイズ候補を以下に挙げます。
・今自分が着目している話題以外の情報
・１次情報の焼き直し
・当たり前すぎる感想
・やたらうんちくばかりで、結論が見えにくいもの
集団での対話/議論においてノイズとみなされ得る候補を以下に挙げます。
・今自分が着目している話題以外の情報
・既に言われた内容の焼き直し
・議論の蒸し返し(過去の話題を調べない質問)
・メタ議論および論点のすり替え(元のテーマはどこへ？)
・話題についてよく知らないのに表面上だけみて貶す
一つ一つについて、私の見解を書きます。異論がありましたら、ぜひご指摘ください。
・今自分が着目している話題以外の情報
もっとも簡単で確実な定義です。この観点では、記事(と便宜的に表現します)の客観的有用性は無関係です。この「ノイズ」については、あぁその人の主観/価値観において不要なんだな、で終わる話で、誰しもこの存在に嫌悪感は抱かないのではないかと思います。議論においてはそうでもない面もありますが、無視すればよいだけの話です。嫌悪感を抱くとしたら我が侭ですよね。そういう人もいますが。
質の悪いケースとして、キーワードだけ関心事を含んでいて、内容は無関係だったというケースがあります。検索などで情報を漁る際にはがっくりするケースですか。でもこれはほとんどの場合は仕方がないですよね…。(追記あり)
・１次情報の焼き直し
・既に言われた内容の焼き直し
既に存在する情報以上のことが全く含まれない記事。この記事なんかもそうですね。でも、これをノイズと思っている人は既に背景を解っている人であり、その記事を初めて見た人にとってはノイズではありません。また、異なる表現で示される事で、より理解しやすいケースも多くあります。その記事が誰に向けた記事であるかによって印象が変わるでしょう。議論においてはノイズになる可能性が高まりますが、議論の参加者が流動的なインターネット上の議論においてはそうでもないと思います。
・議論の蒸し返し(過去の話題を調べない質問)
議論が再発する事自体は否定されるものではないと思います。問題は、既に終わったと考えている人に対して向けられた質問ですね。前項と同様に、記事の向けられた対象によってノイズとみなされる可能性が高まります。でも、これも、ノイズとみなされてもしかたないとはいえ、先人としては、できれば教えてあげたいと思っているはずです。同時多発的にこれが発生したり、教えた事をさらなる後人に伝えようとする努力が見られないようだと、ノイズとして嫌われる事になるでしょうね。先人も気付かなかった新たな視点が提供されるようなものであれば、先人にとってもノイズどころか珠玉の情報となるでしょう。数が少ないうちは説明能力向上のきっかけともなり得ますしね。
・当たり前すぎる感想
まぁ、多くの人が見る価値を感じないことではあります。でも、その人がその時そのような感想を持ったということ自体が情報としての価値があるケースもたくさんありますから、多くの人にとってノイズではあるけれど、否定すべきものではないと思います。
・やたらうんちくばかりで、結論が見えにくいもの
これはノイズと判断する事も微妙であると思います。私にとっては全くノイズではありません。その中に光る情報があるならば。
人によっては、たとえ光る情報があったとしても、そこに辿りつくまでに時間がかかりすぎるようなものだとノイズと同じ、と評価されてしまうことがあるということですね。改善の余地ありとはいえ、やはり否定されるものではないと思います。
・メタ議論および論点のすり替え(元のテーマはどこへ？)
議論において、このような行為は排除されるべきノイズといえるでしょう。その論点は別のテーマとして語ればよいのです。今議論しているテーマが止まってしまうようではよくないですね。でも、メタな部分を議論して前提を共有した上で、元のテーマにみんなが戻ってこれるならよいのです。問題は、その現象に嫌気がさされて、元のテーマに戻ってこれないケースがあるということですね。あと、メタ議論単体を取り出せば、これは重要なことです。あくまですり替えが問題ということですね。
・話題についてよく知らないのに表面上だけみて貶す
ちゃちゃというやつです。余談としてテーマからはずれたちゃちゃはノイズであってもさして迷惑はかからないですが、議論する事へのモチベーションを下げる行為は排除されるべきでしょう。
ノイズの定義は当然ながら受け手次第ですし、全ての情報はどこかにそれを欲している(＝ノイズではないと捉える)人がいるものです。だから、ノイズというキーワードだけで忌み嫌われるのはおかしいのです。しかし、微笑ましくないノイズ、言い換えると他人を侮辱するだけのノイズは通常忌み嫌われるのではないかと思います。無意識的に侮辱してしまっていることもあるのでご注意。指摘には耳を傾けましょう。これは私の価値観でしかなく、一部の人(そのノイズの発信者とそれに確信的に同調する一部の人)にとってはノイズではないと言われるでしょうけれど。
まとめとして、私的には最後に挙げた二つが、ノイズの中でも避けて欲しいと願うものであり、その他のものは、「ノイズ」と呼ばれたとしても特に嫌な気分にならないし、嫌な気分になって欲しくないなぁ、と思うわけです。
(追記)無関係な記事を悪意を持って見せようとする行為(spam)は当然嫌われますです。

コミュニケーションにおける「ノイズ」は通信回線のメタファーによるものなので、厳密な意味で「ノイズ」の定義は難しいところ。
私はいまや"ノイズ"という言葉が元の通信回線におけるそれとは意味が変容しており(あるいは最初からずれていたか?)、メタファというより再定義が必要だろうという気がしておりますです。浅学でいつも直感的感想ばかりではありますが^^;。あと、定義も人それぞれであれば、ノイズの発生様式自体も、受け手の中から出てくるものというのもそのとおりと思います。
以下、本文に記載するのが憚られた自己吐露系です。なぜこの記事を書いたのかも踏まえて自分も参加した一部の議論に関して自己分析します。
例えば、アクセス解析に関する津村さんの記事(※)に関しては、私は、一部の悪意ある人のことを気にし過ぎでは？というスタンスでいます。でももちろん、その一部の人から被害を受ける可能性を重く見た方が議論することはたいへん重要なことであり、ノイズであろうはずもありません。私がその話題について触れた時は、悪意ある人が一部ではなくほとんどであるかのように読める部分についてと、既に自由にアクセス解析ができてしまう現状で、新たに制限されたアクセス解析の仕組みを提案しても、悪意の減少には繋がらないのではないか？という指摘です。それでも新たなる悪意の抑止にはなるかもしれませんので、議論の価値がないとは思いません。やはり言いたいことは、アクセス解析をしている人のほとんどは閲覧者の追跡を目的としていない、ということですね。読み手がその点を誤解しない限りは有用と思います。
では MyClip や trackback に関する議論についてはどうでしょう。
trackback については既に普及してしまっているので、功罪を述べたからと言って trackback がどうこうなるわけではありません。これはアクセス解析と同じで、使う人次第とならざるをえないことです。でも、その罪を議論する事は無価値ではありません。将来現れるサービスに対する糧として機能するからです。もしかしたら拡張 trackback 機能の中に、現在 trackback が抱える罪を軽減する策が入るかもしれませんし。
MyClip はどうでしょう？これはまだ修正が効きます。もちろん、一度出てしまった仕組みなので、他の人が同様のものを作る事を阻止することはできませんが、ここで罪を語っていることは、まだ修正が利く部分です。これは今後の糧というより、今ならまだ変化が可能であるというシステム自体への提案になります。今のところ一極集中であることもその期待を持たせます。
何れも、議論に参加するでもなく、議論が無駄だ、という意識を他の読者に吹聴するような主張こそ真のノイズであると*私は*思います。あるいは、上記のような提案というスタンスではない、一方的にやめろというような主張に対する牽制というケースもあるでしょうけれど、建設的議論を行っている人もひとまとめにして馬鹿にする行為です。これは最も悪いメタ主張ですね。参加し、理解した上で議論の流れの調整を試みるのはよいメタな視点なのですが。このような行為があるから、「メタ議論は悪」という認識が生まれてしまいます。本当はメタ議論も有用なのですが…。
